CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study
“Today, teens of millions of people and business use the Net and the Web daily” (World Book Encyclopedia, 2000). Surfing in the internet indicates the wide spread of technological development. People are surfing the internet for communication, research, business transactions, games and entertainment like watching videos. Some sites that can be accessed in the internet are Facebook, Youtube, Google, Yahoo and many more.
The most common site that the people have access with is Facebook. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow computer science students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes (Study Mode, 2010). Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to post information, upload photos and videos, send messages, and to keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues.
Facebook, nowadays is very popular to all- kids, teens, and adults. The researchers would want to know the effects of using Facebook to CCS freshmen students. This study aims to know the advantages and disadvantages of using Facebook, to know why the site is popular, to know what is with Facebook that made it so popular compared to other social networking sites, and to know what is with Facebook that make the students addicted to it.
Significance of the Study
This study is very important and useful to the students, parents, teachers, and future researchers. Many will be benefited by this study because this study talks about the positive and negative effects of using Facebook. With this study, people will be guided on how to handle things which involves the use of Facebook.
Students. This study is important and useful to students because they will be guided on how to balance their time in using Facebook and studying their lessons. They will also know the advantages and disadvantages of using Facebook specifically in their academic performance.
Parents. With this study, parents will know the possible effects of using Facebook to their children and they can take actions that can help their children maintain good grades while using Facebook. Parents can also talk and give advice to their children on how to balance their studies while using Facebook.
Teachers. The importance of this study to the teachers is that they can also give pieces of advice to their students who are addicted to Facebook. The teachers can also share the things that they have read and learned in this study.
Future Researchers. By the use of this study, the future researchers will be guided and they can get information that could help them in their future study which is also related to this study. The future researchers can also use this study as a basis for their study.
This study is very helpful and important because it helps the people to become aware of the impact of Facebook in their lives.
Statement of the Problem
This study sought to answer the following questions.
1.      Why do students use Facebook?
2.      What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Facebook?
3.      Why do students prefer Facebook than other social networking sites?
Definition of Terms
Facebook. In this study, this term refers to a social networking site that can be enjoyed by many as long as they have created an account for free wherein they can post information, upload photos and videos, send messages, and to keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues.
Effects. In this study, this term refers to the results that happen after doing or making a decision.
Academic Performance. In this study, academic performance refers to students’ performance in the class that determines his/her grades.
Scope and Limitation
This study was conducted to determine the effects of using Facebook to the academic performance of the CCS freshmen students. It is focused only on lasallian CCS 1st year students who are currently enrolled in La Salle University-Ozamis for the school year 2013-2014.
This does not cover any other students who are not lasallian CCS students.

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

Research Design
This study used descriptive method in presenting the data because the researchers simply described the data that were collected. This study used quantitative method because the researchers used numbers in presenting the gathered data and in analyzing it. In giving the questionnaires, the researchers used purposive sampling because the researchers already set criteria as to who will be the respondents. This study used purposive sampling because survey-questionnaires were given to specific respondents.
Respondents and Locale
The respondents of this study were all thirty (30) freshmen students from the College of Computer Studies who are currently enrolled in La Salle University for the school year 2013-2014.
The researchers conducted the study in La Salle University only, particularly in LS Lobby and in the CCS open laboratory where CCS freshmen students often stay.

Data Collection
The researchers used survey-questionnaires (see Appendix A) in conducting this study. The researchers divided the group into two (2). One group went to the CCS open laboratory while the other group went in the LS Lobby.
In the CCS open laboratory, the researchers asked the freshmen students to answer the survey-questionnaire and the students agreed to answer it. The researchers waited for less than five (5) minutes until the students were done answering. After the students gave the survey-questionnaires, the researchers thanked them and then left the laboratory.
In the LS Lobby, the other group of researchers asked some friends (who were sitting) who are CCS freshmen students to answer the given survey-questionnaires and they agreed. When the respondents were done answering, the researchers collected the survey-questionnaires and thanked the respondents. The researchers left the respondents after collecting the survey-questionnaires.

CHAPTER IV

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings
The researchers found out in this study that the CCS freshmen students use Facebook because they want to chat with their friends more often. The researchers also found out that most of the students think that Facebook is helpful in their studies. Upon reviewing the gathered data, the researchers found out that some of the students access their Facebook account even during class hours. The researchers also found out that out of 30 students who are using Facebook, 47% have failing grades while 53% do not have any failing grades.
Conclusions
After gathering the data, the researchers came up to the following conclusions:
1.      Students use Facebook because of the following reasons:
1.1.            They want to update their profile.
1.2.            They want to pass time.
1.3.            They want to find new friends.
1.4.            They want to play interactive games.
1.5.            They want to express their feelings and emotions.
1.6.            They want to check out how their friends are doing.
1.7.            They want to chat with their friends.
2.      The advantages and disadvantages of using Facebook to the students are based on the gathered data.
2.1.            The advantages of using Facebook to the students are the following:
2.1.1.      The students can communicate to their loved ones who are far from them.
2.1.2.      The students can ask the help of their friends on Facebook about their assignment.
2.1.3.      The students can ask their teachers about the lessons that they have missed.
2.1.4.      The student can share files to their friends and classmates.
2.1.5.      The students can get updates easily.
2.1.6.      The students will be safe from drugs and vices.
2.2.            The disadvantages of using Facebook to the students are the following:
2.2.1.      The students will depend on their friends in Facebook about their assignments.
2.2.2.      The students will think that it’s just okay to be absent in school since they could just ask their teachers about the lessons that they have missed.
2.2.3.      The students will not give their best in answering their assignments because they could just ask answers to their friends.
2.2.4.      The students will have a tendency of becoming lazy.
2.2.5.      The students will not listen to their teachers during class hours because they are using Facebook.
2.2.6.      The students will be irresponsible in answering their assignments.
Recommendations
The researchers recommend the students to limit their time in using Facebook in order for them to maintain good grades. the students should also refrain from accessing their Facebook account while discussion is going on. The students should avoid using their Facebook account during class hours because they are not just disrespecting their teachers but they are also putting their studies at risk.
The researchers also recommend to the future researchers to make a research which looks like this but with bigger scope which includes the different Colleges of La Salle University-Ozamiz City and they could also include in their study the students from the different year levels. The future researchers could make a research about the effects of using Facebook to the Health of the Students in different Colleges of La Salle University. They could also make a study about the Effects of Using Facebook to the Relationship of the students.
They could make a study which focuses on the other social networking sites like Youtube, Skype, Twitter and Instagram. They could choose one of the other social networking sites. It could be the Effects of Using Twitter to the Academic Performance or to the Health of the CAS Students. It could also be about the Effects of Using Instagram to the Academic Performance or to the Health of the CTE students. The future researchers could also make a study about the Most Used Social Networking Site. The researchers also recommend the future researchers to make a study about the Most Safest Site or it could be about the Most Dangerous Site That Students Should Avoid To Visit.
